About Nadia Danay

The European Touch website has been around for 12 years to date, supplying our valued customers with upscale skin care and free related advice. We hope to help more people with this blog and invite our clients and visitors to post comments and ask questions. Over time we hope to build our special group of friends, with a common interest : good skin care, for now and always!

Questions I answered recently.

Recently I joined a panel of experts on CharmRoom, a website dedicated to answering skin, hair, makeup and body related questions.

Here are some of the questions I answered, in the hope that this will help other people who have the same question.

Q : “I am new to makeup and want to know the best ways to make my eyelashes look thicker. Thkx!”

A : Use a “volumizing” mascara, like Blinc.
This mascara not only enhances the length and volume of the lashes, but does not run even if you cry.
Ideal for contact lens wearers.
Remove with warm water only, no remover or cleanser.

Q :I wash my face daily, but within 3 hours my face is extremely oily again. What should I do? “

A : Change whatever you’re using to wash your face. It probably contains alcohol which strips the skin and this is why the skin produces more oil.
The oil is there as a protection and if you take it all off, the skin will produce more in self defence.
The face wash I suggest has no alcohol, but cleans the excess oil without stripping the skin bare.  Here is the link to Sothys Purifying Foaming Gel. Another good face wash is Peter Thomas Roth Gentle Foaming Cleanser

:What is a good face cream that will not make my face break out?”

:I suppose the creams that make your face break out are not for your skin type.
It’s not easy finding a good cream if you have combination skin.
I suggest Synchro2000 by GERnetic, which is a moisturizing and regenerating cream that you can use both day and night and whose light texture is just perfect for skin like yours.

Do you have questions like these? Do you have comments on the questions / answers in this post? Don’t be shy! Let us hear your voice and we’ll thank you for it.

Cheers,

Nadia

Fall & Winter Skin Care

dreamstime_xs_5785685If you have sensitive or fussy skin, you know how hard it is to keep your skin happy, especially in the colder months. Once you get the hang of what your skin wants, the weather changes and you are back to square one, right ?

Best solution is to change your products every 3 months or so, adjusting for weather change. Right now it’s time to stop using light summer moisturizers and focus on a good exfoliation to remove the summer dry, flaky tan.

Start using a nourishing night cream and maybe a serum under the moisturizing day cream. Time to add an eye cream to the regime, to nourish those pesky little lines and make them go away!

Here are some suggestions for products we like :

  • Anti-Aging Buffing Beads by Peter Thomas Roth
  •  Yogurt Power Peel by Ilike Organics
  • Sothys Hydradvance Comfort Cream
  • GERnetic Synchro Cream
  • Anti-Oxidant Grape Moisturizer by Ilike Organics
  • Mega Rich Intensive Eye Repair by Peter Thomas Roth

I’ve started answering skin care related questions on Yahoo Answers and discovered a multitude of questions that many of you may have asked yourselves, but never bothered to post. So here we are, some are short, others a little longer, but all of them interesting. I hope you find them interesting enough to post your own answers and maybe start a conversation.

Help me get rid of my back hair!! has anyone got any suggestions?

Nadia’s Answer:

Going to an esthetician and having it waxed off is fast and very effective. You’ll be a little sore for a couple of hours the first time, but using an aloe gel helps and the second time will be much less stressful. If she does a good job, you’ll only need to go back in a month.
The other solution is laser hair removal, which will also be done once a month for approximately 4 -6 months. Make sure you ask if they use a diode laser, which is the best and most effective.

Hair Restoration Products

Hair loss is a common complaint, more so in men than women.

Everyone sheds about 100 hairs each day as part of the normal hair growth cycle, but excess loss is usually a distressing development.

Most people’s hair grows about a half-inch per month, and about 90 percent of your hair is actively growing at any given time, with the other 10 percent in dormant phase. After two or three months, this dormant hair falls out and its follicles begin growing new hair as other follicles begin a dormant phase.

Alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, doesn’t only happen on the scalp. Some illnesses and medications can trigger balding over the entire body, though genetics account for 95 percent of all cases on the head, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

  1. Heredity
  2. Harsh hairstyles or treatments: Hairstyles that consistently use rubber bands, rollers or barrettes, or pull hair into tight styles such as cornrows, can inflame and scar hair follicles. So can incorrectly-used chemical products such as dyes, bleaches, straighteners or permanent wave solutions. Depending on the degree of damage, resulting hair loss can be permanent.
  3. Hormone imbalances: In women, hormonal shifts from birth control pills, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause or hysterectomy can induce more hair follicles than normal to enter the dormant phase.
  4. Illness or surgery: The stress from sickness or surgery may prompt the body to temporarily cease nonessential tasks such as hair production. Specific conditions can also trigger it, including thyroid disorders, syphilis, iron deficiency, lupus or severe infection. An autoimmune condition called alopecia areata, which has no cure, causes rapid body-wide hair loss.
  5. Medications and vitamins: Cancer chemotherapy, which attacks hair follicles in its attempt to kill all fast-growing cells around the body, is a well-known reason for hair loss. Other medications’ side effects include hair shedding as well, such as some that treat high blood pressure and gout.
  6. Nutritional deficits: Heavy dieting or eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia can temporarily stun hair follicles to cease growth. This can also occur from insufficient protein, vitamin or mineral intake.
  7. Aging: A natural effect of growing older is slowed hair growth.

Some of these problems need medical attention, in the form of medication or special vitamin cures.

For people whose problem does not need medication and who don’t want to resort to surgical solutions or wigs and toupees, there are natural hair restoration products.

Many of these are plain hoaxes, but a number of hair restoration products have been scientifically tested and their effectiveness is clear. One of these hair restoration products are created by the Natur-Vital company from Spain.

Most of the effective natural hair restoration products will contain :

–      wheat germ to restructure hair keratin

–      soy which is rich in carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, phenols and minerals

–      saw palmetto extract which contains an enzyme affecting testosterone levels, leading to hair loss

–      ginseng that stimulates and strengthens hair growth

Results of using hair restoration products are not instant. It takes at least 3 – 6 months of regular use, but the results are there.

Continuous use of these hair restoration products can only re-inforce their results.

An alternative solution, albeit temporary, is the use of hair loss concealers, such as Boom Boom Hair. This is a powder made of protein filaments which adhere to existing fine hairs and give the appearance of a full head of hair.

Hair loss concealers are very popular with Hollywood celebrity stylists, some of whose clients are in need of hair loss concealers.

Adult Acne Products & Treatment

Adult acne is quite different from juvenile acne, both in causes and treatment.
Juvenile acne will appear on oily skin and in many cases is treated with topical products containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and other agents which are too harsh and potentially irritating to adult skin.
The causes of adult acne can range from stress to medications, to hormonal inbalance. Hormonal inbalance may be triggered by pregnancy, menopause or HRT (hormone replacement therapy) use.
Unlike juvenile acne, adult acne can appear on normal skin, combination skin and even dry skin.
Medical treatments for adult acne are, unfortunately, almost identical to those for juvenile acne. They include:
– Long-term use of antibiotics. This will weaken the body’s immune response and, by destroying the intestinal flora, will open the door to yeast-type infections.(candida)
– Topical applications of benzoyl peroxide will, depending on strength and frequency, produce free radicals and cause premature aging, just like excessive sun exposure.
– Accutane is a very effective medication in severe cases, but it can cause birth defects and has other serious side effects such as liver damage.
– Glycolic acid products are very useful adult acne products, provided they are used in conjunction with a nourishing cream.
– Topical retinoic acid (vit.A) can be very irritating to adult skin.
– Birth control pill is useful in cases of hormonal inbalance with excess androgens. A visible sign of this would be excess facial hair, hair loss or thinning hair.
With the exception of the birth control pill, all the above adult acne products are sometimes irritating to the skin and will leave adult skin with lifelong sensitivity.
At the European Touch we have alternative adult acne products that offer a gentler solution to heal, nourish and regenerate without any negative side effects.
The adult acne products are made by Gernetic France and are very easy to use:
1. Glyco Milk & Fibro Lotion used am & pm
2. Synchro (or Synchro2000) + Immuno mixed in equal parts am & pm (use very small amounts)
In case of hormonal acne you will, of course, use prescription birth control pills as well as the skin care regime.
Last, but not least we suggest you take a good multivitamin, a tablespoon of milk thistle per day and drink lots of water.
Adult acne is not an insoluble problem and many of our happy clients are living proof of it.
At The European Touch we are commited to your success in treating adult acne. Follow our advice and you will solve the adult acne problem in no time.

Are Your Anti-Wrinkle Products Good Enough for You?

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photos-skin-care-products-cdr-vector-image19139103In the search for effective anti-wrinkle products we are faced with dozens of products that promise the moon and deliver minimal results, if any .

Beautifully photoshopped models in magazines seem to have miraculously benefitted from anti-wrinkle products which do nothing for you once you take them home.

How do you avoid making the same mistake over again?
A little anatomy is in order here, so we understand the mechanics of skin aging.
Our skin is made of 3 major layers :
epidermis – the top layer made of dry, dead skin cells.
dermis – the live, middle layer which contains collagen and elastin fibres, hair roots,
blood vessels, water and other components.
basal layer – primarily fat cells that act as insulation and protection.

Aging happens in the dermis, the live layer. Collagen and elastin fibers break, become slack and naturally occuring cell renewal slows down, so wrinkles set in.
Our skin also contains a large amount of water that plumps up the cells and fills the spaces in between cells. Relatively small amount of water loss, or dehydration, can result in fine lines, which, if dehydration continues, become wrinkles.
Still in the dermis, we find melanocytes, cells that produce a pigment called melanin, a process otherwise known as tanning. Tanning is a self defense mechanism that protects the body from UVA and UVB damage, in itself an aging process.

To summarize: when we look for anti-wrinkle products there are several problems to deal with, therefore any antiwrinkle product worth its salt must address at least one or two, if not more of these problems.

Moisturizers and hydrators are the first line of anti-wrinkle defense. They ensure the water content of the skin is topped up so fine lines have no chance to set in.
Chemical exfoliants such as retinol and glycolic acid will, by their very sloughing action on the skin, cause to speed up the cell renewal process. Collagen and elastin fibers regenerate with anti-wrinkle effect. The skin appears smoother and brighter because layers of accumulated dead cells are removed.
Exfoliation will partially remove sun damage, such as age spots.
Sun screens are to be considered anti-wrinkle preventive products and must be used regularly.
For up to the minute anti-wrinkle products, look for ingredients such as vitamin C that lightens and regenerates, peptides and neuro-peptides that send signals to skin to activate anti-aging mechanisms that help the appearance of deep wrinkles and expression lines.
Now that you have a better overview of the issue of anti-wrinkle products, you can take a look at the jars on your shelf and make sure they are indeed good enough for you.

Organic Skin Care

Group with Title

With so many products claiming to be “organic” we thought it high time to clarify our reasons for choosing Ilike Organic Skin Care in our store.

Ilike Organic Skin Care is the original Hungarian skin care, named after its creator, “Aunt Ilike” (pronounced eeleka)

In their own words, this is how the Ilike company describes their products:

“Our fruit and herbal ingredients are formulated and processed in a unique way under specially controlled conditions that maintains the vitality of the natural active ingredients while eliminating bacteria. Because of this secret process you can immediately experience the rich, deep penetrating effects of our products, as well as their magnificent aromas and colours. The products of ilike organic skin care contain no artificial colours; therefore the colour and even texture of the products can change slightly over time and may even vary by season. Our skin care line does not contain animal by-products and is not tested on animals.

Due to the uniquely rich Hungarian soil and the climate perfectly suited for agriculture, our herbs, vegetables and fruits are very rich in active ingredients and aromatic agents. They are organically grown, hand harvested, hand selected and made in very small batches.

Some ilike organic skin care products are blended with a unique water source – that of Lake Hajduszoboszlo. Searching for oil in 1925, this subterranean thermal spring was discovered by a group of scientists. Research revealed that a combination of salt and fresh water contained in this remnant of an ancient sea submerged by an earthquake contained plant and animal life. The result is water that includes minerals and trace elements and a pH level of 9.5, which is beneficial for dry skin. The water also filtered through layers of mineral rich earth with the ingredients being fermented and heated at approximately 73 degrees Celsius (163 degrees Fahrenheit) and preserved for centuries. Some ilike organic skin careproducts also use the mud and algae from this unique and rich source.”

Recipient of numerous awards, certified organic by European standards and featured in prestigious magazines and TV shows, like The Doctors, ilike organic skin care brings you unparalleled quality  created with old world experience and knowledge.

Going on Holiday? Don’t forget…..

http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-summer-composition-accesorie-beach-image30640480

Are you a scatter-brain? Here are the 12 most popular items that people forget to pack:

First aid kit
No-one plans to get ill on holiday but whether you like it or not, it can happen. Essentials include plasters, diarrhoea tablets, antihistamines, pain killers and travel sickness pills.

Camera
It goes without saying; pack your camera and you can capture the fun memories which you can then look back on and smile about for years to come.

Sun cream
It is imperative that you protect your skin from damaging UV rays and getting sunburnt will only make your holiday a miserable one. Pack plenty of sun cream in various factors.

Passport
You’ll be surprised at the amount of people that leave home without their passport. Trust us- you won’t get very far. Even if you aren’t flying, it’s still a useful form of ID when going away.

Adequate clothes
It can’t harm to pack a light jacket in case it rains. Take some shoes as well as flip flops and pack some smart evening clothes lest there is a strict dress code.

Emergency money
If you lose your purse or get mugged, some backup cash will be a lifesaver. A credit card is ideal or alternatively, pack a few notes and hide it in a separate envelope in your suitcase.

Health Insurance

If you are travelling outside Canada, travel insurance is vital.

Plug adapter
There’s no point in packing your iPod docking station and curling iron if you can’t use them because the plug socket is incompatible. Find out which adapter is suitable, or get a universal worldwide one.

Extra glasses/prescription sunglasses
If you need to wear contact lenses or glasses, pack an extra pair. Prescription sunglasses are ideal.

Phone charger
Taking your mobile? The battery will eventually die if you don’t pack your charger.

Antibacterial gel
There may be times when you can’t wash your hands with hot water and soap, so antibacterial gel is necessary to avoid getting sick.

Accommodation/transfer documents
Nothing could be worse than arriving at your hotel and not having any documents to prove you booked and paid for the accommodation. Print out all receipts and booking confirmations.

Avoid overlooking these essentials by not leaving the packing to the last minute. Easier said than done we know but get organised in advance and you’ll save yourself the hassle (and money) later. A checklist can be handy to help you remember everything.

Sun Protection & You

Sunlight is good for you. I know, there are many reasons why we must have sun protection, but, like many other things in life, moderation is the key.

We need sunshine for our bones, for the vitamin D and for light therapy. Lack of sunshine leads to seasonal affective disease (or SADD)

20 minutes of sunlight (without sunscreen)is all we need for the above reasons.

However, with longer exposure without protection, both UVA and UVB will do both temporary and long term damage. UVA ages the skin and UVB burns.

Pay attention to the label on sunscreen and look for Total Protection, which covers both UVA and UVB. If there’s only SPF, your sunscreen protects only against UVB.

Once you have established that, look for the protection factor which will be a combination of the protection from UVA and UVB.

European SPF numbers are lower than the US, so a European product with SPF8 is the equivalent of SPF12 in the US.

The amount applied makes a difference to the length of time you can stay in the sun. Most people use too little. Rule of thumb is 2 fingers per zone (head, each arm, chest, stomach, upper leg, lower leg – each is one zone)

You must apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and re-apply 30 minutes after, also after swimming.

Because our ozone layer is thinning, we need sunscreen even on cloudy days.

If you need one more reason to use sunscreen, you must know that 90% of squamous cell and basal cell carcinoma is due to sunlight exposure, while the deadly melanoma is 65% caused by UVB damage.

Yes, sunshine is great and we need it, but there is no reason why we should go without sunscreen.

Does Skin Breathe?

So much nonsense is being spouted on this topic that I can hardly know where to start!
Let’s just review the job of our skin, which, by the way, is our largest organ.
– Protection of internal organs is number one. This is why water, gases (oxygen is a gas, remember) and oils CANNOT penetrate the skin.
If they could, you’d swell like a whale after every shower.
There are very few, select substances, like essential oils, which can penetrate because their molecular structure is very small and similar to that of the skin.
Estrogen patches and nicotin patches are full of similar substances – small mollecular size which helps them penetrate the skin barrier.
– Elimination is another job for the skin. It eliminates sweat and produces oils that lubricate and protect.
The pores of the skin are just tiny openings, like the donut holes. Just like donut holes, the pores have no active role. They simply allow sweat and sebum (oil) to flow OUT.
When we apply make up and allow it to stay on for a long time (not remove it at the end of the day) it will mix with the sebum and sweat we produce and let pollutants adhere on top, creating a nasty soup that we can see as blackheads or just very dull skin.
This is why cleansing daily is most important and so is regular exfoliation.
But to get back to the topic, our skin does not breathe. That job is left to the lungs.
There are numerous claims on the market for products that “let skin breathe”.
BOGUS, all of them.
It is a good idea to avoid heavy make up and an even better one to cleanse your face daily. This will avoid occlusion of the pores (plugging), blackheads and creation of breeding grounds for the bacteria responsible for acne.
That is all. Next time you hear about “skin detoxifying”or “skin breathing” you’ll know it it for what it is : nonsense.
Have a Sunny Day

Cosmetic Ingredients : “natural” vs.”synthetic”

I recently read an interesting article on the different meanings the same words have for science and marketing. It was very illuminating in the context of skin care products and their marketing.

Let’s start with the ubiquitous term “natural”. To a scientist it means a group of molecules that are part of living nature, typically plants. These substances can be either isolated from  plants or synthesized.

“Naturally sourced” implies direct extraction from a plant or animal.

Biased marketing has conditioned a positive response to “naturally sourced” ingredients. Marketing people conveniently forget, however, that these sources may not be so appealing.

A good example is hyaluronic acid, used for anti-wrinkle purposes. The “natural source” for this molecule is roosters’ comb. The hyaluronic acid molecule synthesized in the lab is identical and does not imply using animals for its source.

Another problem with sourcing from nature is that in order to obtain a reasonable amount of any given ingredient, one needs to harvest massive amounts of plants. Not a very wise solution environmentally nor very economical from a business perspective.

Additionally, sourcing from plants runs the risk of inclusion of unwanted traces of toxins, pesticides and pollutants.

Synthetic molecules have exactly the identical qualities as their “natural” counterparts, without any of the above drawbacks.

Synthetic molecules are consistent in all their aspects, while “natural” derived molecules are subject to wild variations, depending on climate and harvest conditions, Their qualities are fluctuating and the quality of the end product is fluctuating as well.

Misinformation due to biased marketing is not new. Before deciding for or against an ingredient based just on its being “natural” or synthetic, please remember that some of the best, safe, efficient, consistent and advanced ingredients in today’s skin care are synthetic.
